Early goals cost Vikings at IWU

tallied his first career goal Tuesday
in Augustana's 4-1 setback at Illinois
Wesleyan.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Illinois Wesleyan scored all of its goals in the first 33 minutes of the match Wednesday and went on to defeat Augustana 4-1 at Neis Field. The Vikings dropped to 3-5-2 on the year and 1-2-1 in the CCIW, while the Titans improved to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
 
The hosts grabbed the lead in the eighth minute, when Patrick Hickey scored with the help of assists from Doug Ballard and Luke Cangilla.
 
Ten minutes later, Hickey converted a penalty kick to make it 2-0 IWU. The goal was his fifth of the season.
 
The Titans added goals thee and four in quick succession. Nico Thomas' first of the year made it 3-0 in the 30th minute. Zack Kokes was credited with the assist. Kokes' second goal of the season—three minutes later, off an assist from Konrad Wasilewski—extended the advantage to 4-0.
 
Senior defender Sander Soerhaug (Vardafjell VGS, Haugesund, Norway) got Augustana on the board in minute 36, parlaying a Grant Reuter (Mullen HS, Littleton, Colo.) free kick into his first career goal. The assist was Reuter's first of the year.
 
IWU finished the first half with a 13-5 edge in shots, including 6-2 in shots on goal.
 
A scoreless second stanza saw the Titans put two of eight shots on frame compared to one of five for the Vikings. IWU took five of the six corners in the match. Whistles were abundant, with Augustana called for 27 fouls and Wesleyan for 26. The Vikings were issued two cautions and the Titans one.
 
Senior Jeremy Klaber (Stevenson HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.) recorded four saves, while three Titan keepers combined for two.
 
Augustana returns to Thorson-Lucken Field on Saturday, October 19 to host Millikin at 7:30 p.m. in the back half of a women's/men's doubleheader.
