Senior Jeremy Klaber equaled his
season high of eight saves in a 0-0
tie with Wheaton Saturday at
Thorson-Lucken Field.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – 110 minutes of soccer wasn't enough to decide a winner Saturday, as Augustana and Wheaton played to a 0-0 tie at Thorson-Lucken Field. Coach
Mick Regan's side moved to 3-4-2 on the season and 1-1-1 in the CCIW, while the Thunder is now 7-4-2 on the year and 1-2-1 in the league.
A scoreless first half was remarkably even statistically. Each side took five shots, with three of the Wheaton's and two of Augustana's put on frame. Each team also took two corners and the Thunder were called for four fouls to three for the Vikings.
Wheaton had the first good opportunity in the second half, when Joey Sopikiotis had his shot from close range on the right side miss wide left in the 49th minute. In the 57th, Augustana threatened, but Hasten Biddlecomb deflected
Justin Murphy's (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, Ill.) point-blank attempt over the cross bar.
In the 69th minute
Jeremy Klaber (Stevenson HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.) made a leaping save of a blast off the foot of Alessandro D'Argento. He also stopped the final shot of regulation, an attempt by Drew Beamer in minute 87.
Viking sophomore
Nicholas Dispensa (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) got off the only shot of the first extra session. His try was high in the 94th minute.
The second overtime yielded three shots for the Thunder and one for Augustana. The best opportunity came off a Wheaton corner in the 103rd minute, but Klaber was there to turn away an attempt by Ben Ferraro. Viking junior
Salah Aghlaf (Sabrine HS, Casablanca, Morocco) saw his blast in the 108th minute sail just over the crossbar. The Thunder's Jacob Kapitaniuk got off the final shot in minute 109, but it was off the mark.
The final statistics showed Wheaton with a 15-11 advantage in shots, including an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. Augustana took five corners to the Thunder's four and was called for 16 fouls to a dozen for Wheaton. Each side was issued two cautions.
Klaber matched his season high with eight saves, while Biddlecomb stopped five Viking shots.
Regan's bunch is on the road on Wednesday, October 16, traveling to Bloomington, Illinois to face Illinois Wesleyan beginning at 7:00 p.m.
