and Augustana played to a 2-2 deadlock with Carroll at Schneider Stadium. The Vikings move to 8-1-2 on the season and 1-0-2 in the CCIW, while the host Pioneers are now 2-5-4 overall and 0-0-2 in the league.
The guests took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute. Sophomore
Jenna Dvorak (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) finished off
Abby Wendell's (Hersey HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) right-side corner from 10 yards out straight on. The goal was Dvorak's second of the season, while Wendell registered her team-leading sixth assist.
In the 24th minute, Augustana committed a costly foul about 30 yards out on the right side. Delaney Pruitt placed her free kick perfectly over a leaping
Sydney Ion (Aquinas HS, La Crosse, Ill.) to tie the match 1-1. That was still the score when the sides went to halftime.
It was all Erika Hess as the Pioneers took the lead in the 50th minute. She dribbled through the entire Viking defense before punching a short shot past Ion to make it 2-1.
Gottardo tied it in minute 75, taking Gomez's cross and beating Carroll keeper Christina O'Block for her fourth goal of the season. Gomez was credited with her third assist.
Ion kept the score level with a save in the 76th minute. Three more Pioneer attempts during regulation were off the mark and the sides went to overtime.
Ion turned away a Hess shot in the final minute of the first extra session and Block stopped tries by junior
Lauren Muzzalupo (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) and Wendell in the second. Gomez just missed giving Augustana the victory when she hit the post with a shot in the final seconds.
The match was remarkably even statistically as well. Carroll put five of 10 shots on frame to the Vikings' five of eight. Each keeper recorded three saves. Corners were even at three also and the Pioneers were called for eight fouls to seven for Augustana.
