Vikings fall in double-OT at #13 Wheaton


WHEATON, Ill. – Wheaton's Hannah Cockrum scored in the fourth minute of the second overtime Friday to lift the 13th-ranked Thunder to a 2-1 win over Augustana at Joe Bean Stadium. Wheaton improved to

Cockrums' game winner in the 104th minute was her first goal of the year and came on a header off an assist from Carney Blake. It was Wheaton's ninth shot of the two overtime sessions.
 
The visitors jumped in front in the 13th minute. Senior Andria Serra (Alleman HS, Silvis, Ill.) tallied her team-leading fifth goal of the season with an assist from junior Hannah Rossi (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.).
 
In the 40th minute, the Thunder got the equalizer. Aeva Graber's chip from the left side cleared a leaping Sydney Ion (Aquinas HS, La Crosse, Wis.) and bounced off the crossbar. Sara Bakke was there to collect the rebound on the weak side and finish off the play with her fifth goal of the season.
 
Wheaton outshot Augustana 26-6 and put 12 shots on frame to four for the Vikings. Ion recorded 10 saves. Madison Lee, who entered the match after Serra's goal, logged two of the Thunder's three saves in 91 minutes in goal. The hosts finished with an 8-2 edge in corners and committed 11 fouls to seven for Augustana.
