Sophomore Bennet Tomalin strikes his game-winner versus
Buena Vista Friday night at Thorson-Lucken Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Sophomore Bennett Tomalin (Madison Memorial HS, Madison, Wis.) scored the only goal of the match in the fourth minute Friday, lifting Augustana to a 1-0 win over Buena Vista at Thorson-Lucken Field. Coach Mick Regan's squad improved to 2-2 on the season, while the Beavers dropped to 0-6.

Slightly more than three minutes in, sophomore Chris Plantz (Larkin HS, Elgin, Ill.) had his point blank shot blocked past the end line, resulting in a Viking corner. The Beavers were unable to clear their zone and Tomalin eventually collected the ball just outside the box on the right side and lofted a shot over the head of Buena Vista keeper Manuel Aguilar. The goal was Tomalin's first of the season, as well as the first of his collegiate career.

Augustana kept up the pressure, getting several good opportunities during the remainder of the half. Junior Salah Aghlaf (Casablanca, Morocco) narrowly missed making it 2-0 in the 16th minute when his shot went just wide. By halftime, the Vikings had outshot their guests by a 10-2 margin.

The hosts had a 9-4 edge in shots in the second half, but the Beavers applied their best pressure late. Junior Jeremy Klaber (Stevenson HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.) made the save on a Sam McLachlan shot in the 81st minute and David Arona's attempt just before the final horn went wide.

For the match, the Vikings had a 19-6 advantage in shots, putting four on frame to three for Buena Vista. Both Klaber and Aguilar finished with three saves. Augustana also had a 9-1 edge in corners.

Regan's bunch is back in action at Thorson-Lucken Field on Sunday, September 16, hosting Nebraska Wesleyan at 4:30 p.m. in the back end of a women's/men's doubleheader.
