Schneider Stadium. Coach
Steve Bell's outfit improved to 4-5 on the season and 3-5 in the CCIW, while the host Pioneers fell to 3-6 overall and 2-6 in the conference.
Carroll took the opening kickoff and drove 70 yards in seven plays for touchdown. Preston Bell finished things off with a 16-yard scoring run and Carson Roseleip's point after gave the Pioneers a 7-0 lead.
After the teams traded punts, Augustana answered. Quarterback
Zachary Fuller (St. Patrick HS, Schiller Park, Ill.) connected with
Max Uranich (La Salle-Peru HS, La Salle, Ill.) for a 13-yard completion on a third-and-10 play and the Vikings converted a third-and-13 when Carroll was called for pass interference. Jarosz eventually took it in from three yards out to cap an 11-play, 76-yard drive.
Ryan Ganson's (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) kick tied it at 7-7 with 2:11 left in the first quarter.
The Pioneers drove to the Augustana 24-yard line early in the second period, but sophomore cornerback
David Lane (Civic Memorial HS, Bethalto, Ill.) ended the threat when he intercepted Colton Bahling at the Viking four.
Fuller hit Uranich for 39 yards as the visitors drove 70 yards to the Carroll 26 before the drive stalled. Ganson's 43-yard field goal try was wide left. Following a Pioneer punt, Augustana put together a nine-play, 65-yard march which Ganson finished with a 28-yard field goal to put his team up 10-7 with 3:38 left in the half.
The Vikings got one more shot to score before the half ended. After forcing another Carroll punt, they drove from their own 23 to the Pioneer 24 in 30 seconds, but Ganson's 41-yard try was wide left as the gun sounded and Augustana took a 10-7 advantage to intermission.
Fuller completed four straight passes for 52 yards to start the opening drive of the second half. Three plays later, senior
Ryan Pitra (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) scored on a one-yard run to cap an eight-play, 60-yard march. Ganson's conversion put the Vikings on top 17-7.
Carroll drove to the Augustana 23-yard line late in the third quarter, but junior
Xavier Holley (Bettendorf HS, Davenport, Ill.) sacked Bahling for an eight-yard loss on fourth down. However, the Pioneers pulled to within three points on their next possession. J.J. Keels rushed three times for 34 yards before Bahling eventually took it in from seven yards out. Roseleip's extra point made it 17-14 with 9:08 to play.
On the ensuing drive, the Vikings went to the ground game to grind out a 16-play, 69-yard drive culminated with an eight-yard scoring run by Jarosz. The only two pass completions were big ones, as Fuller hit Uranich for seven yards on third-and-five and
Tom Dolis (Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) for 10 yards on fourth-and-nine. The march took 7:11 off the clock and Ganson's third PAT of the day gave Augustana a 24-14 lead.
An
Austin Nice (Normal Community HS, Bloomington, Ill.) sack ended Carroll's last-gasp drive and the Vikings took a knee to run out the final eight seconds.
Fuller finished the day 18 of 27 through the air for 223 yards with one interception. Pitra led the rushing attack with 103 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. Jarosz carried 11 times for 52 yards and two scores. Uranich caught six passes for 123 yards.
In addition to his interception, Lane led the defense with eight solo and nine total tackles. Linebackers
Cassin Wolfe (
Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) and
Luke Sawicki (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) were each in on eight stops. Nice finished with three tackles for loss and Holley recorded a pair of sacks.
Augustana wraps up the 2018 season on Saturday, November 10. The Carthage Red Men invade Lindberg Stadium for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
