Sophomore Jenna Dvorak narrowly
missed scoring the game-winner
twice Monday, as Augustana tied
Beloit 1-1 on the road.
Augustana grabbed a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute. Junior
Anna Fank (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) played a long pass ahead to sophomore
Karissa Gottardo (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.). Beloit defender Courtney Ceurvorst beat Gottardo to the ball, but in an attempt to play the ball to keeper Connor Keegan-Lloyd, headed it over Keegan-Lloyd and into the empty net.
The Vikings got off five shots in the first half and put three on frame, but couldn't extend the advantage, as the sides went to intermission with the score 1-0.
The Buccaneers got the equalizer in minute 63. Genesis Dade's free kick from five yards past midfield settled just outside the box. Hanna Metalfe collected it and she went high from 15 yards out on the right side to beat Augustana keeper
Sydney Ion (Aquinas HS, La Crosse, Wis.).
The Vikings got off six more shots during the final 27 minutes of regulation—including a header by sophomore
Jenna Dvorak (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) that bounced off the top of the crossbar and out of play—but couldn't regain the lead. Despite outshooting its hosts 11-3 in the second half and 16-6 in regulation, Augustana went to overtime.
Neither side got off a shot in the first extra session. In the second, the Vikings took the only three shots attempted. In minute 107, Dvorak had another header bound off the crossbar.
The final shot totals were 19-6 in favor of Augustana. The Vikings put seven on frame to four for Beloit. The visitors had a 5-1 edge in corners. Ion finished with three saves, as did each of two keepers used by the Buccaneers—Keegan-Lloyd in the first half and Kaitlyn Erickson after halftime.
Augustana is back in action on Saturday, October 13, taking on Millikin in Decatur, Illinois beginning at 5:00 p.m.
