Vikings blank Millikin 1-0

DECATUR, Ill. – Senior Andria Serra's (Alleman HS, Silvis, Ill.) goal early in the second half Saturday lifted Augustana to a 1-0 victory over Millikin at Lindsay Field. Coach Scott Mejia's Vikings improved to 9-
11080
Junior Anna Fank and the rest
of the Augustana defense limited
Millikin to just four shots Saturday
in a 1-0 win in Decatur, Illinois.
2-3 on the season and 2-1-2 in the CCIW, while the Big Blue fell to 5-8 and 2-2, respectively.

The first half was played largely in Augustana's offensive end, but the Vikings couldn't take advantage. They outshot their hosts by a 7-1 margin, putting three attempts on frame, but came away empty.

Millikin keeper Jennifer Miller turned away a Lauren Muzzalupo (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) shot in the third minute, one from Grace Sigler (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) in minute 29 and another by Abby Wendell (Hersey HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) in the 38th minute. Jenna Dvorak's (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) header off a Wendell corner in the 22nd minute went high.

Serra finally cracked the Augustana goose egg in the 51st minute. She took a pass from senior Jordyn Sundberg (Aurora Central Catholic HS, Oswego, Ill.) and put her shot from slightly on the right side, 20 yards out, inside the far post  to give the Vikings the lead.

Miller kept her side in the contest, recording a save on Karleen Gomez's (Grayslake HS, Hainesville, Ill.) shot in the 76th minute and another on a Wendell free kick in minute 82. However, the Augustana defense denied the Big Blue any serious scoring opportunities. Millikin did not get a shot off in the final 25 minutes.

The Vikings finished with a 15-4 advantage in shots, including a 9-2 edge in shots on goal. Each side took five corners and committed eight fouls.

Sophomore Sydney Ion (Aquinas HS, La Crosse, Wis.) went the distance in goal for Augustana, recording a pair of saves and her fourth solo shutout of the season. Wendell and  juniors Anna Fank (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) and Hannah Rossi (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) anchored the defense in front of Ion, as the Vikings posted their seventh shutout this year.

Miller made eight saves for the Big Blue.
