defeat Augustana 3-1 at Strong Complex. The Vikings dropped to 3-6 on the year, while the Buccaneers improved to 2-8-1.
Although most of the action took place in Augustana's offensive end early, it was the hosts that jumped on top in the 18th minute. Viking keeper
Jeremy Klaber (Stevenson HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.) came out in an attempt to punch away a Jonathan Palmer free kick. He couldn't get there and Jason Venzke gathered the loose ball and found the empty net to put the Buccaneers up 1-0.
That's the way the first half would end, despite an 8-2 advantage in shots for Augustana.
Markell, playing just his second match of the season, tallied the equalizer in minute 59. His first collegiate goal came without the aid of an assist.
Freddy Widmer scored his first goal of the year to regain the lead for Beloit in the 70th minute and Griffin Engel parlayed an Andrew Marchesi assist into his second goal of the season to make it 3-1 in the 79th minute.
The Vikings ended up with a 13-8 edge in shots, but the Buccaneers put six on frame to five for the visitors. Beloit split its goalkeeper duties, with Alex Lyon going the first 45 minutes and E.J. Lowney finishing up in the second half. Each recorded a pair of saves. Klaber made three saves for Augustana.
The Vikings took all five corners in the match.
