ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Coach Scott Mejia's Augustana squad wrapped up the 2018 regular season Saturday night with a 1-0 Senior Night win over Carthage at Thorson-Lucken
11161
Sophomore Karissa Gottardo
scored the only goal in Augustana's
1-0 win over Carthage Saturday at
Thorson-Lucken Field.
Field. The Vikings improved to 13-2-3 on the season and finished CCIW play with a 5-1-2 record and in second place. The Lady Reds dropped to 7-8-3 overall and 1-5-2 in the league.

The visitors outshot Augustana 3-2 in a scoreless first half. Each side put a single shot on frame. The Vikings' came in the 15th minute off the foot of Andria Serra (Alleman HS, Silvis, Ill.) and Carthage's from Courtney Lee in the 33rd minute. Emily Furmanek and Sydney Ion (Aquinas HS, La Crosse, Wis.) recorded the respective saves.

The Lady Reds took four of the first five shots in the second half, but it was Augustana sophomore Karissa Gottardo (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) who broke the scoreless tie in the 71st minute with her sixth goal of the season. Classmate Grace Sigler (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) and junior Anna Fank (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) were credited with assists on the play.

The Viking defense handled it from there, blocking Carthage's final three shot attempts of the evening and recording its 10th shutout of the season. Ion needed just one save to post her seventh solo shutout of the year—tied with Keri Hess (2006) for sixth-most in program history.

The Lady Reds finished with a 10-4 edge in shots, but put just one on goal. Augustana put just two shots on frame. Carthage led 4-2 in corners and committed 11 fouls to the Vikings' half-dozen.

Honored by Mejia and his program on Senior Night were captains Serra, Abby Wendell (Hersey HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Jordyn Sundberg (Aurora Central Catholic HS, Oswego, Ill.), along with Natalie DeBartolomeis (Mullen HS, Lone Tree, Colo.), Haley Grunewald (Freeport HS, Freeport, Ill.) and Karleen Gomez (Grayslake HS, Hainesville, Ill.).

The second-seeded Vikings will host a CCIW Tournament semifinal versus third seed Illinois Wesleyan (12-4-1, 5-3) at Thorson-Lucken on Wednesday, October 31. The starting time of that match is to be determined.
