Carter Amundsen (left) and Mackenzie Butcher (right) are the winners of the
Jack Swartz Award in the CCIW for the spring of 2017.

A pair of standout Augustana underclass athletes were named the winners of the Jack Swartz Award for the 2016-17 spring sports season. Sophomore Mackenzie Butcher (Sand Creek HS, Colorado Springs, Colo.) and junior Carter Amundsen (Sheboygan South HS, Sheboygan, Wis.) were the Viking selections. Butcher is the top pole vaulter on the women's track & field team while Amundsen is the starting right fielder on the baseball team. Vikings had a total of 126 academic all-conference honorees during the spring season, which included the sports of baseball, softball, men's outdoor track & field, women's outdoor track & field, men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, men's tennis, women's tennis, men's golf & women's golf.

The Jack Swartz Award is given to one male and one female athlete at the end of each athletic season. The honor is given by the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin and each of the eight schools in the league are allowed to pick their own representatives. The only requirement is that the winners must earn a varsity letter in his/her sport and have a grade point average of at least 3.50. The award is named after the late Jack Swartz, who served as the Commissioner of the CCIW until his death in 1998.

Butcher has been one of the Vikings top pole vaulters since she stepped on campus in the fall of 2015. She won the CCIW pole vault title at the 2017 indoor conference meet and was also the winner of the event at the Darren Young Classic in the indoor season. During the outdoor season of her recently-completed sophomore campaign she placed second in the pole vault in the CCIW with a clearance of 12' 0". She won the pole vault at the Ashton May Invitational and the Lee Calhoun Invitational with a leap of 12' 2 ¾", which is second highest vault in Augustana history.

As a freshman she burst upon the scene by winning the vault in three different invitational (Sol Butler, Darren Young and Spartan Invitational). She was named the CCIW Field Athlete of the Week and was an NCAA Division III national meet qualifier. In the outdoor season as a freshman she won the pole vault at the Viking Olympics and was named the CCIW Field Athlete of the Week again.

She is the daughter of Kevin and Jean Butcher of Colorado Springs, Colorado and she has a 3.93 grade point average in biochemistry. Butcher is very active in the Quad City community as she serves as the Elementary Age Small Group Leader at Heritage Church in Rock Island and also volunteers at New Dawn International Children & Family Service. At New Dawn she is involved with Tanzanian refugees as they make the transition to American Culture and the English language.

Butcher is involved in Augustana's Intervarsity Christian Fellowship and also in Best Buddies where she works with people with intellectual disabilities to build one-on-one relationships.

The leading hitter on a Viking team that finished the year 30-14 overall and 14-10 in the CCIW, Amundsen pulled in all sorts of honors this year. He was named to the Academic All-American Baseball Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and was first-team all-conference and first team all-Midwest Region team by D3baseball.com and second team by the American Baseball Coaches Association. He helped his team to second place finishes in the regular season and the tournament of the CCIW.

Batting from the leadoff position, Amundsen hit .374 with 68 hits in 182 at bats while collecting 13 doubles. He scored 45 runs, had 32 runs-batted-in and drew 23 base-on-balls. He also stole a team-leading 15 bases and had a slugging percentage of .445 and an on-base percentage of .468.

He ranked fourth in the CCIW in batting at .408 (league games only) and led the conference in walks (18) and plate appearance (124), was second in on-base percentage (.512) and tied for fifth in runs scored (28).  He ended the season on a 16 game hitting streak and he collected a base hit in 38 of the 44 games he played this year.

Amundsen is an accounting and business finance major with a sparkling grade point average of 3.97. He is the treasurer of the Augustana Business Club and has served as an intern for Priority Sign of Sheboygan, Wisconsin and the Lakeshore Chinooks Baseball and Kapco Metal Stamping of Grafton, Wisconsin. He is the son of Carl and Mary Amundsen of Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
