VIKINGS SET SCHOOL RECORD FOR VICTORIES IN A SINGLE SEASON IN 13-8 CAMPAIGN
A late season run that saw them win eight of their final 10 matches propelled the Augustana Vikings women's soccer team to a new school record. Second year head coach Scott Mejia's team was 5-6 after losing to Aurora by a score of 1-0 on October 6. The Vikings were also 0-3 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin at the time and had been outscored 11-2 in the three league losses.
Things started to change on October 9 with a 7-0 victory at home against Clarke and by the time the season ended Augustana had an overall record of 13-8. That established a new school record for victories in a single season, breaking the old mark of 12 set by the 1995 when Krisan Steiger's team went 12-5-2. The Vikings won their final four games in the CCIW, including a 1-0 win over Carthage on the final night of the regular season to qualify for the conference tournament.
Augustana was 4-3 in league play and finished in fourth place in the CCIW. The first round opponent in the CCIW tournament was regular season champion Wheaton and the Vikings season ended with a 2-0 loss on the Thunder's home field on November 6.
The 2002 season will go down as a tale of two halves. In the first half (11 games), the Vikings were 5-6 and allowed 22 goals while in the second half (10 games) they were 8-2 and gave up just 10 goals. The only losses in the final month was to a pair of teams that made the NCAA Division III national tournament (Luther 2-3 on October 30 and Wheaton 0-2 on November 6).
Mejia now has a record of 23-18 in his two years as the head coach at Augustana and his overall college coaching record is 48-35-1. That includes two years at Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wisconsin where he was 25-17-1 in two years prior to coming to Augustana.
Junior forward Kendra Petrie
(Cary Grove HS, Cary, IL) led the Vikings offensive attack with 19 goals and one assist for 39 total points. She moved into a tie for third place on the school's single season goals scored list, matching the 19 goals scored by Cherie Peterson in 2000. Peterson also has the first (34 in 1999) and second (26 in 1998) best single season totals in Augustana history. Petrie's 39 points is fourth on the single season list. Petrie now has 35 goals and seven assists in her career for 77 total points. She is currently in second place on the Vikings career list for both goals scored and total points, trailing Peterson in both categories.
Senior Meredith Thomas
(Quincy Notre Dame HS, Quincy, IL) was the second leading scorer with eight goals and three assists for 19 total points. She put the finishing touches on a fine career with 24 total goals and 13 assists for 61 total points. Thomas, who performed as Meredith Moss for three years before getting married this past summer, is fourth in career goals scored, tied for third in assists and tied for fourth in total points.
Freshman Annie Gajewski
(York HS, Elmhurst, IL) led the team in assists with seven, which is just one shy of the single season school record set by Yvonne Gagliano in 1994.
After splitting time early in the year, Kristen Hanekamp
(Glenbrook South HS, Glenview, IL) took over the goalkeeping duties and she finished 2002 with a fine goals-against-average of 0.99 with 16 goals allowed in 20 games. She had four shutouts during the course of the season.
The Vikings have now put together seven seasons of at least 10 victories, including the last two in a row.
