2013 Women's Soccer Review

Augustana finishes 12-5-4 overall; 4-2-1 in the CCIW; earn sixth NCAA tournament bid in nine years; Maggie Hoscheit named team MVP, Academic All-America; Meredith Chew named all-region; four Vikings earn All-CCIW recognition

Coach Scott Mejia’s Augustana soccer program earned its sixth NCAA tournament appearance in the last nine seasons in 2013. The Vikings finished 12-5-4 overall and 4-2-1 and in fourth place in the CCIW. Senior defender Maggie Hoscheit (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) garnered Academic All-America recognition for the second consecutive year and also hauled in team MVP and Iron Viking honors for this year’s side. Sophomore goalkeeper Meredith Chew (Paradise Valley HS, Phoenix, Ariz.) was named to the NSCAA All-Central Region second team. Both Hoscheit and Chew were selected to the All-CCIW first team for the second consecutive year. Freshman Jessa Rizzo (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) joined them as a first team all-conference  pick, while sophomore Kelly Farell (St. Ursula Academy, Sylvania, Ohio) was named to the second team.

The Vikings opened the season at Aurora University’s Chelsea Lloyd Memorial Classic. After an impressive 5-0 win over Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Augustana needed two second-half goals to salvage a 2-2 tie versus St. Norbert.

From Aurora, it was off to Moorhead, Minnesota and Concordia’s Cobber Invite, where Mejia’s bunch handled Simpson (3-1) and the hosts (2-1). On September 14, the Vikings played their first home match at Thorson-Lucken Field, defeating Principia 2-0. That started a string of five consecutive shutouts by the Augustana defense, which included a 9-0 win at Eureka and home victories over Greenville (3-0) and Grinnell (4-0). The streak also included a scoreless tie at 17th-ranked Loras.

On October 2, the then 14th-ranked Vikings suffered their first loss, a 2-1 double overtime head-scratcher at Milwaukee School of Engineering. The team entered CCIW play with a 7-1-2 mark.

The conference season started with a 1-0 win at North Park on October 5. Four days later in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Carthage scored one of just two goals allowed all season by Augustana in CCIW play, but it was enough to hand the Vikings a loss. Playing its third of four straight road matches to open the CCIW schedule, Augustana forged a 0-0 tie at Illinois Wesleyan to move its record to 8-2-3 overall and 1-1-1 in the league.

Playing at home for the first time in two and a half weeks, the Vikings recorded a 1-0 non-conference win over Wartburg. Taylor Navarro’s (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) goal in the 78th minute decided things.

The team snapped out of a bit of a scoring slump with a 5-0 whitewash of North Central in Naperville, Illinois, setting up a showdown with top-ranked Wheaton in Augustana’s CCIW home opener on October 23. The Thunder scored in the ninth minute and that goal held up the rest of the way as Wheaton dropped the Vikings to 10-3-3 on the year with a 1-0 setback. A 2-0 win over Elmhurst and a 3-0 Senior Day victory over Millikin wrapped up CCIW play. Those two Thorson-Lucken matches were sandwiched around a 1-1 non-conference tie at 16th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Finishing with a 12-3-4 regular season ledger, the Vikings again faced top-ranked Wheaton in the CCIW Tournament semifinals, this time on the road.  Tied at 0-0 with less than a minute left in regulation, the match looked headed for overtime, but the Thunder’s Anna Seabolt scored with 30 seconds left as Wheaton advanced.

Despite the loss, Augustana earned its sixth NCAA Tournament big in the last nine seasons. The Vikings faced second-ranked Trinity (Texas) in the first round in Bloomington, Illinois. The high-scoring Tigers proved to be too much, defeating Augustana 3-1. The Vikings’ final three losses of the season all came against teams ranked either first or second in the nation.

Statistically, the defense – led by Hoscheit and Chew – carried Mejia’s squad in 2013. Augustana allowed just 13 goals in 21 matches for a goals against average of 0.59. In CCIW play the team’s miniscule 0.28 GAA led the league. Individually, Chew posted an 11-5-4 record with a 0.63 GAA and an .860 save percentage. Her .946 save percentage and three solo shutouts in conference play both led the CCIW and as a team, the Vikings ranked 22nd in the nation with a save percentage of .869.

Other standouts for a defense that at one point this year went 558 consecutive minutes without allowing a score, included juniors Kimberly Grimmer (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) and Kerri Skotnicki (Waubonsie Valley HS, Aurora, Ill.) and sophomore Stef Hamaker (Boylan Catholic HS, Caledonia, Ill.).

Offensively, Farell led the Vikings with nine goals and five assists and is now tied for sixth on Augustana’s career assist list with 16. Rizzo scored eight goals and a dealt out a pair of assists. Navarro was third on the team with seven goals and tied for second with sophomore Jessica Kras (Glenbard North HS, Carol Stream, Ill.) and freshman Kera Linn (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) with four assists. Freshman Hannah Lohmeier (Waunakee HS, Waunakee, Wis.) found the net six times and sophomore Somer Druszkowski (Lincoln-Way Central HS, Manhattan, Ill.) added five goals and three assists.
