Vikings take down Calvin 3-1 at final day of Pikes Peak Challenge

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory over the Calvin Knights on Saturday, finishing the Pikes Peak Challenge with a 2-1 record.

The Vikings jumped out to an early advantage, taking the first two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-13. Augustana hit .303 in the opening set and .280 in the second while limiting Calvin to a combined .095 hitting percentage across the two frames.

Calvin answered in the third set, using a 13-kill performance to claim a 25-20 victory and extend the match. Augustana responded in the fourth, controlling the set from the start and closing out the match with a 25-18 win.

Sophia Sommesi led the Vikings offensively with 12 kills while adding 12 digs. Taryn Jones followed with 11 kills, seven digs, three service aces and a pair of blocks. Carmela Carbone contributed six kills, while Elle Jones also recorded six kills and four blocks.

Augustana's serving game proved to be a major difference-maker. The Vikings recorded 13 service aces compared to four for Calvin, with Lanah Queckboerner leading the way with four aces and 11 digs. Niya Mincheva added three aces and 10 assists.

At the net, Alita Folkening and Kelsey Mathews each recorded five blocks, while Jones added four. Augustana finished with 11 total blocks compared to four for Calvin. Alyssa Millan paced the offense with 15 assists, while Mincheva added 10. 

With the win, Augie improves to 2-2 on the season and will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 11 to host UW0-Stevens Point.
