Women’s Volleyball begins weekend with loss to UW-Stevens Point

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - After a successful trip to Colorado this past weekend, Augustana College women's volleyball (2-3, 0-0) returned to the Roy J. Carver Center Friday night for a matchup with the University of Wisconsin Stevens-Point (3-3, 0-0). Despite a competitive third set, Augustana could do little to slow down Stevens-Point all match, being swept 3-0

Inside the Box Score

How it Happened

First Set

After Stevens Point opened the scoring thanks to an Augustana attack error, the squads traded points until it was 4-4. From there, consecutive Augie attack errors gave UWSP a 6-4 lead. A service error then brought the Vikings back within one, but four straight Pointers points built them a 10-5 advantage, forcing Augustana to use their first timeout of the set.

Out of the timeout, Augie took three of the next five points to cut the deficit to four, 12-8. That deficit quickly jumped up to six, and soon ballooned to nine after a 5-2 Stevens Point run made the score 19-10, causing the Vikings to use another timeout.

Two of the first three points out of the timeout belonged to the visitors as they soon led 21-11. A three-point spree by the Vikings pulled them within seven, but a 4-1 run by the Pointers closed out the set, giving them a 25-15 set win and a 1-0 lead in the match.

Second Set

The first three points of the second set belonged to Stevens Point, but Augustana responded swiftly with a 3-0 run of their own to knot the game up. That tie did not last long however, as a 6-1 spree from the visiting team made it 9-4 in their favor. A service error gave Augie a point, but back-to-back kills from the Pointers increased their lead to 11-5.

Augie closed the gap quickly though, taking the next four points to pull within two, 11-9. An attack error ended the momentum however, and another two UWSP kills made it 14-9 and led to the Vikings' first timeout.

Augustana collected the first kill out of the pause, but then Stevens Point picked up where they left off with another four straight points to take a commanding 18-10 lead and force another Augie timeout.

Thanks to a 3-2 run, the Vikings cut the lead down to single digits, 23-14, but a UWSP and Augustana attack error ended the set, handing Stevens Point a 25-14 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Third Set

With their backs against the rope, the Vikings struck first in set three as the teams went on to split the first four points of the set. A pair of kills and a bad set from the Pointers did give Augie a 5-2 advantage, but three straight scores from UWSP tied the set at 5-5. From there, the squads swapped blows up until 11-11. This led to three straight points by the Pointers and, now down 14-11, Augustana called their first timeout of the set.

While Augie grabbed the first point out of the stoppage, consecutive scores from the visitors put their lead at four, 16-12. With UWSP threatening to run away with the set, the Vikings used a 6-2 run to even things up at 18-18. Stevens Point found some breathing room thanks to scoring three of the next four, but back-to-back kills from the Vikings tied the set again at 21 all. A kill briefly put the Pointers back on top, but an ensuing service error made it 22-22. However, that is all the Vikings could muster. Two straight scores put Stevens Point at set-point and, following an Augie timeout, the Pointers secured the 25-22 set win with a kill, clinching the match 3-0.
