STORM LAKE, Iowa -- The Augustana women's soccer team erupted for six second-half goals Friday evening, overcoming an early deficit to defeat Buena Vista 6-1.
The Vikings found themselves trailing just 18 seconds into the match when Buena Vista found the back of the net. Augustana responded with pressure throughout the opening half, outshooting the Beavers 5-1 and earning four corner kicks, but Buena Vista carried a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Augustana came out of the locker room with renewed energy, quickly turning the match in its favor. Mary Baker sparked the comeback in the 51st minute, leveling the match with her first goal of the evening. Just under five minutes later, Skylar Swanson gave the Vikings their first lead of the night, scoring in the 56th minute. Augie continued to apply pressure, and Allison Gibeau extended the lead in the 59th minute to make it 3-1. Gibeau struck again in the 74th minute, converting a penalty kick to give the Vikings a three-goal cushion. Baker added her second goal of the night in the 77th minute, and Giorgia Felicita capped the scoring in the 83rd minute as Augustana completed the comeback with six unanswered goals.
Baker and Gibeau led the team with two goals apiece, while Sara Schinker saved two shots in her 77 minutes in goal.
With the win, Augie moves to 1-0-1 on the season and will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 9 for a road trip at UW-Platteville.
