Box Score
STEVENS POINT, Wis. - Hunting for their first win of the year, Augustana College men's soccer (1-1-1, 0-0-0) visited UW-Stevens Point (2-3-0, 0-0-0) on Saturday to take on the Pointers. After over 80 minutes of scoreless action, Jamie K'Otieno exploded for two goals in four minutes to give his team a 2-0 win.
Inside the Box Score
- K'Otieno scored both of Augustana's goals, converting on both shots he put on goal.
- Elias Banke was outstanding in goal, stopping all nine shots he faced for his first shutout of the season.
- Cameron Scupham put a pair of shots on frame as well for the Vikings.
How It Happened
First Half
Stevens Point wasted no time generating offensive pressure, putting three shots on frame within the first 3:04 of the match. Fortunately for Augie, Banke stopped all three attempts to keep the score at 0-0. The Pointers were back on the attack at 18:31 with another pair of shots-on-goal, but Banke was unbeatable once again.
Augustana generated their first shot on goal at 24:36, but UWSP's keeper made the stop. Less than two minutes later, Banke was challenged again, but, as before, the Viking goalie stood tall. Another attempt on cage did not come until 38:03 thanks to Scupham's shot, which was stopped by the opposing keeper.
Following a wave of subs by both teams, UWSP managed to get one more shot attempt off before halftime, but it sailed over the net to send the teams into the break still scoreless.
Second Half
The defense controlled the first 16 minutes of the second half, with the first shot not coming until Lambis Fostiropoulos' attempt missed wide right at 61:31. Nine minutes later, Banke was called upon again to make a save and preserve the scoreless affair.
After a missed shot from both sides, the Vikings finally broke the tie at 81:18 when K'Otieno converted on a penalty kick, giving his squad a 1-0 lead. Both goalies made saves in the ensuing action, but K'Otieno struck again at 85:12 on a follow-up attempt off a saved Scupham shot.
That insurance marker secured the win for Augie, with Banke holding on for the shutout and 2-0 victory.
