Baseball falls to Carthage in CCIW tournament

DECATUR, Ill. – The Augustana Vikings baseball team saw its CCIW Tournament run come to an end on Wednesday evening, falling 5-4 to the Carthage Firebirds in the opening round.

Augustana wasted little time getting on the board in the top of the first inning. Riley Hendren sparked the offense with a one-out double to left field before Kaileb Hackman followed with a single to center, driving home Hendren to give the Vikings an early 1-0 lead. Carthage responded with a run in the bottom of the inning before taking the lead in the second. The Firebirds added another run in the bottom of the third to make it a 3-1 game.

The Vikings threatened multiple times through the middle frames but could not crack the code on the Firebird pitching staff. Despite collecting multiple hits, Augustana was held off the board until the top of the seventh. Hendren opened the frame by reaching base before Hackman delivered again, lining an RBI single to left field to cut the deficit to 3-2. Just a few batters later, Charlie Bergin came through with a single to right center, allowing Hackman to scamper home and tie things up at 3-3. The Vikings kept Carthage in check in the bottom of the seventh, but the Firebirds found the go-ahead runs in the eighth, making it a 5-3 contest late.

The Vikings refused to go quietly in their final at-bat. Hackman reached base before Bergin, with two outs, recorded his second RBI of the night, singling through the left side to score Hackman and make it a one-score game. With two men on, the Firebirds closed the door on the Viking comeback attempt, completing the 5-4 quarterfinal victory.

Hackman and Bergin each drove in two runs for the Vikings, while Hendren scored twice and added a pair of hits. Zach Quimby also finished with three hits in the loss. Blake Nettleton turned in six innings on the mound, striking out six while allowing just two earned runs.

With the loss, the Vikings close out the 2026 season at 25-16, 10-10 in CCIW action, good for fourth place in the conference.
