Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball scores 33 runs, sweeps Elmhurst

MOLINE, Ill. – The Augustana Vikings collected 33 runs across 16 innings of baseball, downing the Elmhurst Bluejays and picking up their first conference sweep of the year.

Game One: Augustana 23, Elmhurst 0 (7 innings)

The Vikings wasted no time in the first inning. Ryan Coon got things going at the top of the order before Riley Hendren delivered early damage, driving in runs to put Augustana on the board. Kaileb Hackman followed with a run-producing swing of his own, and the Vikings quickly built a multi-run lead before Elmhurst could settle in.

In the second and third innings, Augustana sent wave after wave to the plate in a massive frame, turning the lineup over and continuing to cash in. Charlie Bergin reached and came around to score as the rally built, while Ryan Theile followed with a run of his own after getting aboard. AJ Macak stayed hot, reaching and later crossing the plate as the Vikings continued to pile on. Zach Quimby delivered the biggest blows of the third inning, driving in multiple runs as Augustana stretched the lead into double digits. Carson Vitry and Christian Clark both contributed to extending the inning, reaching base and eventually coming around to score as the Vikings refused to let the inning end.

In the middle innings, Augustana continued to tack on. Coon reached again and later scored, while Hendren added to his day by coming around once more as the lineup kept producing. Hackman continued his strong performance at the plate, driving in runs and eventually scoring as well. Bergin turned in one of the biggest days offensively, reaching multiple times and scoring three runs, while Theile added another run after getting on base and moving through the inning. Macak continued to set the table and capitalize, finishing off another trip around the bases as Augustana extended the margin.

Quimby capped off a monster performance, driving in runs throughout the game and finishing with one of the top offensive outings of the season, as the Vikings continued to add on in the later innings. By the time the run rule came into effect, nearly every spot in the lineup had contributed. Augustana totaled 23 runs on 22 hits, with multiple players recording multi-hit and multi-RBI performances in a complete offensive showcase.

On the mound, the Vikings were just as dominant, as Chance Carruthers picked up another win, while holding Elmhurst to just four hits and in the shutout.

Game Two: Augustana 10, Elmhurst 9

Looking to get an early edge, Elmhurst struck first with a six-run second inning. THe Vikings, however, were undeterred in their mission to head to Easter break with a series sweep. Coon reached to begin the push and came around to score as the Vikings manufactured their first run of the game. Hackman helped keep the inning alive, and Quimby brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to get Augustana on the board.

In the middle innings, Augustana strung together a rally that completely shifted momentum. Macak reached and later scored as the lineup started to turn over.  Bergin followed by reaching and coming around to score, while Carson Vitry added another run after getting on base. Clark delivered a key at bat in the rally, driving in multiple runs as Braiden Elliott and Bergin both crossed the plate. Moments later, Vitry came around to score, tying the game and bringing the Vikings all the way back.

In the sixth inning, Bergin once again came around to score after reaching base, and Vitry followed, crossing the plate on another clutch hit from Clark. Hendren added to the rally with an RBI knock, bringing Augustana even at 9–9.

Quimby reached and moved into scoring position before a balk allowed him to come home, giving the Vikings life late. Moments later, Clark delivered again, driving in Lawson Shickel and Macak to tie the game once more and complete another comeback push. Momentum fully on their side, the Vikings finished the job, holding off Elmhurst in the final frame to secure the 10–9 victory and complete the sweep.

With the sweep, Augustana secures its first three-game conference series win of the season. The Vikings return to action Tuesday, April 7, hosting Millikin at Swanson Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
