Baseball drops home finale

MOLINE, Ill. – The Augustana Vikings baseball team battled for nine innings before falling 5-4 to the Monmouth FIghting Scots in their final home game of the season.

Augustana answered right away after surrendering a first-inning run, as Riley Hendren came around to score in the bottom half of the inning. After leading off with a single and moving into scoring position, Hendren crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from Lawson Shickel to knot things up at 1-1. Monmouth took back the lead in the third, but the Vikings responded again in the fifth. Ryan Coon reached on an error, and quickly worked his way around the bases with a stolen base and advancement on a wild pitch, before ultimately scoring on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Zach Quimby, tying the game at 2–2.

The Vikings grabbed their first lead in the sixth inning. Alec Schaublin ripped a double down the left field line and later came home on a Carson Vitry RBI double, giving Augustana a 3–2 advantage. The Vikings found the lead once again in the bottom of the seventh. Facing a 3-3 tie, Zach Quimby singled to kick off the inning and came around to score when August Besemer drew a bases-loaded walk, giving Augustana a late 4-3 lead. Monmouth answered late, however, scoring once in the seventh to tie the game before adding single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to complete the comeback and secure the 5–4 win.

Hendren, Schaublin and Mack paced the Vikings with two hits each. Schaublin also added a pair of doubles in the effort.

With the loss, the Vikings slipped to 24-13. They are on the road for the final three games of the regular season, starting with a single game with Carroll on Friday, May 1 at 6 p.m.
