Baseball powers past Carroll in midweek clash

MOLINE, Ill. – The Augustana Vikings baseball team turned a quiet start into a runaway win on Monday night, erupting for 12 runs across the final four innings to roll past the Carroll Pioneers, 12–2.

After being held off the board through the first three innings and falling behind 2–0, Augustana answered in the fourth. Charlie Bergin got things started with a single, and AJ Macak followed with a double to put two in scoring position. Bergin came home on a groundout from Zach Quimby, and Macak followed moments later, scoring on a groundout by Braiden Elliott to tie the game at 2–2, the last frame the game would be tied.  In the fifth, Christian Clark worked a walk and Ryan Coon followed with a single to put two runners on. Both came around to score when Kaileb Hackman launched a three-run home run to center, giving Augustana a 5–2 lead, and the Vikings never looked back from there.

Augustana broke open the floodgates in the sixth. Quimby came around to score on an RBI single from Clark, and Hendren followed with a two-run home run that brought Clark home before scoring himself to push the lead to 8–2. Later in the inning, Coon added another run, scoring as Hackman reached on a fielding error to make it 9–2. The Vikings tacked on three more in the seventh, as Quimby and Macak both came home on a two-run single from Lawson Shickel, and Elliott followed by scoring on another RBI single from Clark to cap the scoring at 12–2.

On the mound, Aidan Conners was dominant in relief, tossing 3.1 shutout innings with five strikeouts to shut the door after the early innings. Hackman led the way with a three-run home run and four RBIs, while Clark finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Hendren added a two-run homer, and Shickel drove in a pair late. Coon reached base three times and scored twice, helping set the table throughout the middle innings.

With the win, the Vikings improve to 22-11, 8-7 in the CCIW. Augustana hits the road for a battle with Knox on Thursday, April 23. A rare midweek afternoon game, first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Galesburg.
