Softball sweeps Carroll

WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings softball team sealed two victories against the Carroll Pioneers on Sunday. The Vikings earned a 4-2 win in game one before a 9-0 shutout in the second game.

GAME ONE

Augie fired first in the opening inning, as A'Rion Lonergan singled and then stole second. Aubrey Gradin moved Lonergan to third on a single before she crossed home plate on an error. The Pioneers answered in the bottom of the inning to even the score at 1-1.

The score stayed even until the top of the fifth, when Alexis Duke singled to center and ran home after Olivia Osborne doubled to left field to regain the upper hand. Emma Evans followed with a double to right field to score Osborne.

In the following inning, Lindsay LaVine singled to left field and stole second. Gradin drove her home after a double to left field, making 4-1. In the final inning, Carroll scored two but was unable to overtake the lead to conclude the game 4-2.

Seven Vikings collected hits in the win, with LaVine and Duke hitting three apiece. On the mound, Mya Brown pitched all seven innings with 11 strikeouts and 143 pitches.

GAME TWO

Augie struck first again in the second, when Osborne was walked and came home on a double by Addie Garr. In the top of the fourth, Madi Bickell added to the lead with a solo home run to center field to move the game 2-0.

The Vikings sailed in the top of the fifth after scoring four runs to run away with the lead. Maya Viel ran for Garr after a walk and ran home after a single by LaVine, a stolen base, and a single by Marley Behm. LaVine and Behm each stole a base and scored after Lonergan singled to center field to stretch the gap to 5-0. Lonergan then crossed the plate on Bickell's single to left field.

In the seventh, Duke and Gradin hit back-to-back home runs to extend the game 8-0. The Vikings earned their final run of the game on a hit by pitch with bases loaded to seal the 9-0 victory.

10 Vikings earned hits in the win, with Bickell leading with two. Garr earned the win on the mound after six innings and eight strikeouts, while Lauren Koster closed the game in the circle with five pitches.

With the two wins, Augie improves to 10-15 on the season and 4-4 in conference play. The Vikings will be back in action for a non-conference road battle at Grinnell.
