Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball takes two, sweeps Saturday twinbill against North Central

NAPERVILLE, Ill – The Augustana Vikings baseball team took both games of the twinbill with the North Central Cardinals on Saturday, picking up a 9-0 shutout in game one, and a 5-3 defensive effort in game two.

Game One: Augustana 9, North Central 0

In the first inning, Ryan Coon picked up a single and eventually came around to score on an AJ Macak base hit, setting the tone early as Augustana grabbed a quick 1–0 lead. After a scoreless second frame, the Vikings added on again in the third. Macak came through once more, bringing home Kaileb Hackman to give Augustana a little more breathing room at 2–0.

After four more scoreless innings from both sides, it was the Vikings who broke things open in the eighth. Hackman got things started with a leadoff single and moved to third after a Charlie Bergin base hit. One out later, a pair of fielder's choice plays kept the inning alive, and both Macak and Bergin came around to score on a throwing error, stretching the lead to 4–0.

Augustana kept the pressure on. Lawson Shickel added an RBI knock to bring home another run, and two more Vikings came across in the continued rally to push the advantage to 7–0. Christian Clark capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Shickel for the final run of the frame.

The Vikings added two more in the ninth to put the finishing touches on it. With two runners on, Zach Quimby ripped a double to right field, bringing home both Macak and Bergin to close out the scoring and secure the 9–0 win.
On the mound, Blake Nettleton was in complete command. The right-hander struck out 15 and allowed just five hits and two walks. Nettleton recorded the first two outs of the ninth before Brian Fischer came on to finish things off and lock up the shutout. At the plate, Hendren, Bergin, and Macak each recorded two hits as part of a 13-hit effort for the Vikings.

Game Two: Augustana 5, North Central 3

Augustana had to wait a bit longer to get things going in game two, but when the breakthrough came, the Vikings made it count and backed it up late to finish off the Saturday sweep with a 5–3 win.

The first run of the game came in the third inning, and it started with Christian Clark finding his way on with a single to left. After moving to second on a balk, Riley Hendren followed with a single to right. A misplay in the outfield allowed Hendren to move all the way to third, while Clark came around to score, giving Augustana a 1–0 lead.

The Vikings held that edge into the middle innings before the Cardinals moved in front in the sixth, but Augustana didn't trail for long. Instead, they took the lead back in the seventh, and that proved to be the difference.

Blake Seaser got things going, working his way around the bases and coming home on a Lawson Shickel single up the middle to even things up. Moments later, Clark came through again, lining a single to left to bring home Ryan Theile and give the Vikings a 3–2 lead. Ryan Coon followed with a base hit up the middle, scoring Shickel and stretching the lead to 4–2.

Augustana added one more in the eighth. Charlie Bergin swiped third and never stopped, coming all the way home on the throw to tack on an insurance run and make it 5–2. North Central made one last push in the ninth, but it was too little, too late.

On the mound, Chance Carruthers worked six innings, allowing two runs while striking out four to earn the win. Brian Fischer picked up the save, striking out three and allowing one run in the ninth. Clark led the Vikings at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the victory.

With the win, the Vikings improve to 20-7 overall and 6-3 in CCIW play. Augustana returns home on Sunday, April 12, looking to complete the series sweep at Swanson Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
