WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Augustana Vikings women's water polo team finished CWPA Weekend with a perfect 4-0 record after defeating the Penn State Behrend Lions 20-11 on Sunday.
In the opening period, both teams were scoreless until
Jersey Merrick found the back of the net with 3:04 on the clock. The Lions followed a minute and a half later to move the game 1-1 after eight minutes of action. The Vikings outscored Penn State Behrend in the second with a 5-4 margin. The Lions secured the lead early before Merrick drew the score even. The teams traded successful shots once again before Augie scored three consecutive goals, with shots for Augie coming from
Emma Blezien and two from Merrick. Blezien doubled the score with 1:47 remaining in the half, and the Lions tallied two to move the difference to 6-5 entering the halftime break.Â
Returning to action, the Vikings fired three straight goals to move the gap to 10-5 before Penn State Behrend got on the board in the third. Augie maintained the advantage with
Anais Jones getting past the goalie with 33 seconds remaining to lead 14-7 heading into the final period. In the fourth, Augustana scored six and held the Lions at four. Both teams rallied shots before Augie collected three with 3:02 on the clock at 19-10.
Elly Jo Fay sealed the victory with 52 seconds on the clock to claim the 20-11 victory.Â
Seven Vikings scored in the win, with Merrick, Fay, and
Braelyn Hill firing four apiece.
With the win, Augie improves to 17-3 on the season and will be back in action on April 10th for the CWPA Championships.
