Men's lacrosse wraps up spring break against Washington & Jefferson

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Augustana Vikings men's lacrosse team fought hard in their final spring break contest, but a second-quarter surge by the Washington & Jefferson Presidents proved to be the difference as the Vikings fell 12-8 on Saturday afternoon.

Augustana came out aggressive and struck first, with Eddie Resendez opening the scoring before adding a second goal later in the first quarter. Nik Schaafsma assisted on the second tally as the Vikings built a 2-1 lead behind strong possession and efficient offensive looks. Washington & Jefferson answered late in the period to even the score at 2-2, pushing back against the Viking attack.

The Vikings knotted things up midway through the second quarter when Schaafsma finished off a feed from Caiden McCann to make it 3-3, but the momentum quickly moved in favor of the Presidents. Washington & Jefferson responded with a four-goal run over the final 10 minutes of the half, including a pair of man-up scores, to take a 7-3 lead into the break.

After halftime, the hosts continued to apply pressure on the Viking defense, extending the lead to 10-3 early in the third quarter. Augustana responded with a spark midway through the period as Schaafsma scored twice in quick succession, trimming the deficit heading into the final frame.

Refusing to surrender, Tommy Wimmers found the back of the net early in the fourth quarter to make it 11-6. After Washington & Jefferson added another goal, the Vikings closed strong with late tallies from Resendez and Connor Schlachter to round out the scoring.

Resendez and Schaafsma led the offensive effort with three goals apiece, with Schaafsma adding an assist for a four-point performance. Wimmers and Schlachter each contributed a goal, while McCann recorded an assist to round out the scoring. Resendez delivered another dominant performance, winning 19 of 23 draws while adding 10 ground balls to help Augustana control possession throughout the contest. The Vikings also held an advantage on the ground, finishing with 46 ground balls. Defensively, Jamar Taylor led the way with five caused turnovers and 12 ground balls, anchoring a unit that created extra opportunities and kept Augustana within striking distance. In goal, Hagan Quigley recorded nine saves over 60 minutes of action.

The Vikings slip to 3-7 on the year. They return to action on Saturday, April 4, when they travel to Carthage for their first CCIW matchup of the year. Faceoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
