Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men's volleyball clipped by Loras

ROCK ISLAND – The Augustana men's volleyball team dropped a four set contest against the visiting Loras Duhawks on Wednesday night inside the Roy J. Carver Center.

Augustana exploded out of the gate in the opening frame, getting early points from Ryan Huntington and Alexander Sulewski while Tom Lamb added a service ace to help the Vikings move in front 9–5. Loras worked its way back into the set, but Augustana kept answering. Aidan Bolen and Lamb delivered key kills during the middle stretch, and after the Duhawks pulled even at 19–19, the Vikings stayed right there. Bolen and Sulewski helped Augustana erase another late deficit and tie the score at 23–23 before Loras found the final two points to take the opener.

Augustana had a much better finish in the second set. The Vikings stayed patient early, then began to piece together points behind Bolen, Sulewski, and Bryce Lawson. Lawson gave the offense an extra spark off the bench, while Colin Schaefer kept the ball moving and put hitters in good spots throughout the set. Loras pushed ahead 19–17, but Augustana flipped the momentum from there. Bolen brought the Vikings back, Cole Clarke added a kill, and Augustana closed the set with an 8–1 run. Gavan Moua delivered a late service ace, and the Vikings finished off the 25–20 win to even the match.

The third set turned in the middle. Augustana stayed close early and got points from Bolen, Lamb, Lawson, and Sulewski, but Loras began to create some breathing room with a stretch of points midway through the frame. The Vikings continued to battle with late kills to push back on the Loras lead. The Duhawks found another gear late, and kept control long enough to close out the set 25–19.

The fourth set followed a similar script. Augustana stayed within striking distance early, with Clarke opening the scoring and Bolen adding several kills as the Vikings tried to keep pace with the Duhawks. Lawson and Logan Kearns also chipped in points later in the set, and Sulewski added another kill during a late push. Loras controlled much of the middle portion of the frame and did enough down the stretch to lock the set and ultimately the match.

Bolen led the Vikings with 19 kills, while Sulewski added eight and both Lamb and Clarke finished with seven, while tacking on three solo blocks. Schaefer handed out 40 assists and also contributed 16 digs, while Bolen and Huntington each added eight digs. Alvers finished with seven digs.

With the loss, the Vikings slipped to 8-8 on the season. They resume action this Friday with a trip to Westminster. That game is set for a 7 p.m. first serve.
