Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Vikings victorious in five set thriller

MOLINE – Competing inside the historic Wharton Field House, once home to the franchise now known as the Atlanta Hawks during its time in the Quad Cities, the Augustana Vikings men's volleyball team battled through five tightly contested sets to earn a 3–2 nonconference victory over MSOE on Friday night, 30–28, 20–25, 25–23, 27–29, and 15–11.

The opening set featured extended rallies and constant side-out exchanges, with neither team able to build more than a two-point advantage. Augustana leaned on balanced offense early, as Cole Clarke, Aidan Bolen, and Tom Lamb each delivered kills to keep the Vikings even with the visitors throughout regulation. After the set moved beyond 25 points, Augustana relied on a kill from Lamb and an MSOE attack error to secure the marathon opening frame.

Augustana stayed within reach early in the second set, trading points through the opening stretch. Ryan Huntington and Bolen provided steady production, but a mid-set swing allowed the visitors to take control. Despite continued pressure from the Vikings, the second frame slipped away, knotting the match at 1–1.

The Vikings responded with a strong third set, establishing small leads throughout behind efficient side-out play. Huntington sparked the offense, while Clarke and Bolen continued to score in transition. After the set was tied at 17–17, Augustana executed down the stretch, winning eight of the final 14 points to take the set 25–23 and a 2–1 advantage heading into set four.

Another extra-point battle followed in the fourth set, as Augustana held several late leads and reached set point first behind continued production from Clarke, Bolen, and Lamb. The frame extended into extra points as both teams traded side-outs, but the Vikings were unable to close, and the visitors finished the set 29–27 to force a decisive fifth.

After trading points early in the final frame, Augustana took the lead before the sides switched and maintained control the rest of the way. Bolen maintained pressure at the net, while Huntington added kills to keep the Vikings in front. Augustana maintained control down the stretch to seal the match with a 15–11 victory.

Bolen paced the Vikings with 18 kills, Clarke finished with 14 kills and four total blocks, while Huntington contributed 12 kills while hitting .393. Lamb added nine kills, and Colin Schaefer aided the offense with 50 assists and 10 digs. Alexander Sulewski chipped in six kills and three block assists as Augustana finished the match hitting .261 as a team.

The Vikings are back in action at home on Tuesday, February 10 at 7 p.m., when they host Benedictine.
