Women's basketball slowed at North Central

NAPERVILLE – The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team battled North Central on Wednesday night, but fell 68–55 to the Cardinals. With the loss, the Vikings move to 10–10 overall and 5–6 in CCIW play.

The teams traded baskets throughout the opening quarter, with Cali Papez knocking down a three-pointer to open the scoring for Augustana. Paige Melton followed with a free throw before Giulia Milazzo split a pair of defenders to give the Vikings an early 6–3 advantage. Augustana maintained the lead for most of the period behind contributions from Audrey Erickson and Tia Lewis, carrying a 16–13 edge into the second quarter.

North Central's defense took control in the second period, holding the Vikings to just six points while forcing seven turnovers. The Cardinals capitalized offensively, turning those miscues into points and flipping the momentum to take a 34–24 lead into halftime.

Jazmeriah Jones opened the second half with a strong layup through traffic, while Lewis and Milazzo each added buckets for the Vikings. North Central answered with a steady transition attack, extending its lead to 16 by the end of the third quarter.

Augustana mounted a charge in the fourth, opening on an 11–3 run sparked by back-to-back baskets from Lewis and Jones. Papez followed with four straight points on a jumper and two free throws, and Lewis added a layup and a free throw to keep the rally alive. After a brief response from the Cardinals, the Vikings answered again, as Milazzo and Papez combined to go 4-for-4 from the free-throw line with under three minutes remaining. North Central closed the game by scoring five of the final seven points to secure the 68–55 victory.

Lewis, Papez, and Milazzo each reached double figures in scoring, while Papez led the Vikings on the glass with nine rebounds. Augustana received 25 points from its bench and held a 26–22 advantage in points in the paint.

The Vikings hit the road again this weekend, traveling to nationally ranked Carroll on Saturday, February 7, for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
