Men's lacrosse drops defensive battle in home opener

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana built an early lead but was unable to slow a second-half surge from Cornell, falling 6–3 on Wednesday afternoon at home.

The Vikings came out strong in the opening quarter behind Nik Schaafsma, who scored twice to give Augustana an early advantage. Schaafsma opened the scoring at the 11:56 mark and added another less than six minutes later, helping the Vikings take a 2–0 lead after one quarter of play.

Augustana retook a two goal lead early in the second quarter when Tommy Wimmers found the back of the net, pushing the Vikings ahead 3–1. Cornell answered with two goals later in the quarter to even the score at 3–3 heading into halftime.

The Vikings continued to create offensive opportunities throughout the second half, finishing the game with 32 shots and maintaining pressure in the attacking zone. Defensively, Augustana battled throughout and held a 34–26 advantage in ground balls, with Eddie Resendez leading the effort with six ground balls.

Cornell capitalized on its chances in the fourth quarter, scoring three times to pull away and secure the 6–3 win.

Schaafsma led the Vikings offensively with two goals and a team-high 17 shots, while Wimmers added the team's third score. Goalkeeper Hagan Quigley recorded 10 saves in net for Augustana.

The Vikings move to 2–2 on the season and will look to bounce back this weekend with a trip to Spalding on Saturday, Feb. 28. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
