Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball stalled by the Firebirds

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. The Augustana Vikings men's basketball team came down to the final possession Saturday night at Carver Center, falling just short in a 75–73 loss to Carthage in CCIW action.

The Vikings battled throughout, erasing multiple deficits and tying the game in the closing seconds before Carthage answered with the go-ahead basket with just two seconds remaining.

Carthage opened the night with an early run, but Augustana settled in behind contributions from Riley Brooks and Ryan Johnson. A three-pointer from Brooks midway through the first half helped steady the offense, while Johnson added key points inside as the Vikings worked to stay within reach.

Augustana closed the half strong, cutting the deficit to 40–36 at the break following a late basket from Ray Maurchie, keeping momentum on the Viking side entering the second half.

Out of the break, the Vikings continued to push back against the Carthage attack. Jake Willems tied the game at 40–40 early in the second half, part of a stretch where Augustana forced difficult looks and controlled the defensive glass. Dani Romero and Andre Klaver each recorded blocks during key defensive possessions, helping limit Carthage's opportunities and allowing Augustana to stay within striking distance.

Carthage responded with a run midway through the half, building an 11-point advantage, but Augustana answered once again. Willems converted inside, Dom Rhoden knocked down a three, and Klaver steadily chipped away at the deficit from the free throw line.

The Vikings' defensive pressure created additional chances late, and Augustana capitalized. Rhoden connected from deep with just over three minutes remaining to cut the margin to five. Moments later, Klaver stepped to the line and knocked down four straight free throws in the final minute, tying the game at 73–73 with 13 seconds left.

After a timeout, Carthage converted a layup with 2.4 seconds remaining. Augustana had one final look, but the shot would not fall as time expired.

Klaver led Augustana with 18 points, including a perfect 9-for-9 performance from the free throw line. Rhoden added 16 points, while Marieon Anderson finished with 13 and Willems contributed 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds. The Vikings also received valuable bench production, totaling 27 points from their reserves.

Defensively, Augustana recorded five blocks and held Carthage under 40 percent shooting in the second half while forcing several key stops during their late comeback effort.

The Vikings slip to 10-13, 5-9 in the CCIW. They look to rebound on Wednesday, February 18 when they travel to North Central. That game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
