Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Four top double figures in loss to Wheaton

WHEATON, IL — The Augustana Vikings men's basketball team battled the Wheaton Thunder in a tight contest on Wednesday night but came up short in the closing minutes, falling 71-65. The loss drops Augustana to 10-9 overall and 5-5 in the CCIW.

The Vikings opened the game with a 7-2 lead and maintained control for most of the first half. Marieon Anderson hit back-to-back jumpers, Jake Willems and Cam Atkinson drained key three-pointers, and Andre Klaver and Dom Rhoden contributed timely buckets to keep Augustana in front. Wheaton took its first lead of the night on a free throw with 1:15 left in the half, but the Vikings trailed for just 14 seconds total before closing the period strong. Atkinson connected on a three-pointer, and Andre Klaver added a layup in the final five seconds to send Augustana into halftime with a 38-34 advantage.

After the break, Wheaton came out aggressively, but the Vikings responded with key baskets from Dani Romero and Atkinson to stay ahead. Augustana built a six-point cushion midway through the second half behind shots from Atkinson and Caden Workman. Wheaton chipped away at the lead by going 9-of-11 from the free-throw line in the period. The game featured several ties and lead changes in the final minutes. Romero gave Augustana its last lead of the night, 61-59, on a layup with under four minutes to play. An 8-0 run by the Thunder put the Vikings in a tough spot, but Augustana fought back with four straight free throws—two each from Klaver and Willems—to pull within three points. Wheaton sealed the win with four clutch free throws, a pair of blocks, and a late turnover.

Klaver led the Vikings with 14 points and seven rebounds. Atkinson added 13 points, Willems contributed 12 points, and Romero chipped in 10 points. Four Vikings finished in double figures.

The Vikings are off this weekend and return to action on Wednesday, February 4, when they host the Elmhurst Bluejays at Roy J. Carver Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
