Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Papez records fifth double double of the year against Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team battled through all four quarters but ultimately suffered a setback on the road Saturday afternoon at Carthage.

Augustana fell behind early, but contributions from Cali Papez, Paige Melton and Tia Lewis allowed the Vikings to chip into the Firebird lead. Despite the early push, Augustana found itself in a 10-point hole after the opening quarter.

Papez got to work to start the second period, scoring the first four points for Augie, but the host offense proved difficult to slow. Carthage added 13 points in the frame to extend its advantage, taking a 40-23 lead into halftime.

Kadence Tatum and Tia Lewis came out firing in the third quarter, and a brief seven-point run around the four-minute mark sparked a potential Augustana comeback. However, a few costly turnovers and missed opportunities opened the door for Carthage to respond, allowing the hosts to take a 22-point lead into the final stanza.

Refusing to go away, the Vikings outscored Carthage 22-16 in the final ten minutes. Tatum and Jazmeriah Jones each connected on three-pointers, while Melton and Papez closed out the frame with strong trips to the free-throw line as Augustana continued to battle until the final horn.

Four Vikings reached double figures in scoring, with Lewis pacing the squad at 13 points. Papez recorded her fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 12 points and 15 rebounds to lead Augustana on the glass. Tatum added 11 points, while Jones tallied 10 to round out the Augie effort.

The Vikings return to action on Wednesday, January 27, welcoming North Park to the Roy J. Carver Center. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
