Women's basketball rumbles past Thunder

ROCK ISLAND – They say lightning comes before thunder, but on Wednesday night it was the Augustana Vikings who finished in front, taking down the Wheaton Thunder in the Roy J. Carver Center, 58 to 46. With the win, the Vikings moved to 9-8 on the year, 4-4 in CCIW play.

The teams traded blows throughout a tightly contested first quarter. Neither side led by more than three points before the media timeout, with Wheaton holding a slim 12-9 edge. Four lead changes and two ties occurred in the opening 10 minutes, and the Thunder took a narrow 19-18 lead into the second quarter.

Just 18 seconds into the second period, Augustana reclaimed the lead and never looked back—relinquishing it only once the rest of the way. The Vikings outscored Wheaton 11-5 over the remainder of the half to take a 29-24 advantage into the locker room. Augustana dominated the glass in the first half with 19 rebounds and added five steals. Cali Papez led all scorers with eight points through the first 20 minutes.

Both teams locked down defensively to start the third quarter, combining for six turnovers in the first four minutes and just one made field goal—a Tia Lewis jumper that made it 32-26. Audrey Erickson then connected on a pair of free throws with 2:56 remaining in the period, pushing the Vikings' lead to eight points. Wheaton answered with two free throws to close the quarter, drawing some frustration from the home crowd, but Augustana carried a 39-33 lead into the fourth.

After trading turnovers on four straight possessions to open the final period, Cali Papez converted a quick layup, followed immediately by two free throws from Audrey Erickson to stretch the lead back to double digits. Wheaton sent Augustana to the foul line multiple times in the closing minutes, allowing the Vikings to maintain their advantage and secure the 58-46 victory.

Two Vikings ended the night in double figures, with Cali Papez scoring 19 points, while Audrey Erickson contributed 18 of her own. Tia Lewis added six total rebounds, and Jazmeriah Jones was a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe. Augustana collected 35 rebounds, and shot 42.5% from the field.

The ladies will hit the road on January 24 when they take on Carthage. That contest is set for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
