Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Vikings emerge victorious over North Park

CHICAGO – With just a month remaining until the CCIW conference tournament, the Augustana Vikings men's basketball team earned a strong 92-87 road victory over the North Park Vikings on Wednesday night. The win improves Augustana to 10-7 overall and 5-3 in CCIW play.

The visiting Vikings jumped out to a commanding start, scoring the game's first 10 points in the opening 2:30 with a mix of layups and jump shots. Eli Aldana connected on a big three at the 4:17 mark of the first half to push the lead to 13 points, Augustana's largest margin at that stage. North Park responded with a run of their own, trimming the deficit to 17-12, but Augustana quickly regained control.

Cam Atkinson drained a deep three to help the Vikings reach the 20-point mark, and a tough defensive stretch forced multiple turnovers on consecutive possessions. Eli Aldana set up Ray Maurchie for a score as Augustana crossed the 30-point threshold with 9:24 left in the half. The Vikings continued to attack the paint, scoring 14 points in the lane, while going near-perfect from the free-throw line at 17-18. Cam Atkinson and Jake Willems combined to go 5-5 from beyond the arc. All of this contributed to Augustana's highest first-half road scoring output of the season, leading 51-32 at the break.

Both teams traded baskets early in the second half before key miscues and turnovers allowed North Park to mount a run, cutting the lead to 11 points with 10:02 remaining. The host Vikings applied steady pressure to bring the game within three possessions, but Andre Klaver answered with back-to-back free throws and a quick bucket to restore a double-digit advantage. North Park threatened late, but Augustana held firm to secure the important road win at the midpoint of conference play.

Six Vikings reached double figures in scoring. Andre Klaver led the way with 22 points, while Dom Rhoden added 17. Cam Atkinson finished with 15 points, Eli Aldana had 13, Ray Maurchie contributed 11 points and nine rebounds (one shy of a double-double), and Jake Willems added 10 points.

Augustana shot 51.1% from the field, went 40-48 from the free-throw line, grabbed 37 rebounds, and scored 30 points in transition.

The Vikings return to action on Saturday, January 24, when they travel to face Carthage in a battle of second place teams. That game is set for a 4:15 p.m. tip-off.
