ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings football team picked up a big win over the Millikin Big Blue on Saturday by a score of 33-6.
In the opening quarter, Augie recovered a muffed punt to set up an 18-yard passing touchdown from
Jimmy Makuh to
Breyden Smith.
Jacob Garbett secured the extra point with a successful kick attempt. In the Vikings' second offensive showing, Makuh completed a pass to
Ethan Vrabec for 35 yards, and
Ben Ludlum followed with a rush down the middle for a six-yard gain and an Augustana touchdown. Millikin saw a 14-play drive before a one-yard rushing touchdown, before
Zach Gray blocked the extra point attempt and was recovered by
Peter Stapleton to hold the Big Blue to 14-6.
At the beginning of the second quarter, both teams showed strong defense until an 11-play drive finished with
Josh Lim rushing up the middle for four yards into the end zone with 4:22 on the clock. Garbett kicked the extra point attempt to move the score to 21-6. In the following drive for Augie, he saw nine plays before Garbett closed the drive with a 35-yard field goal to close the half 24-6.
Returning to the field, the Big Blue saw a punt attempt with a bad snap to move the ball to the back of the end zone for a safety and add two points to Augustana's score. During the very next offensive showing, Ludlum saw four rushing plays up the middle for a total of 13 yards. Lim followed with a 20-yard rushing gain to the left to score once more.
In the final quarter, both teams saw two drives, but neither team found the end zone to conclude the game 33-6.
Makuh finished the day with 20 completions on 25 attempts for 174 yards. Lim led with 12 attempts, with 81 yards and two touchdowns, while Ludlum had 53 yards on nine attempts. Vrabec received four passes for 58 yards, and Smith had 44 yards on six receptions. On the defensive side,
Toby Splitt led the Vikings with a total of 10 tackles, with eight being solo and two assisted.
TJ Klein sacked the Millikin quarterback twice for a total of 19 yards.
Jacob Tyrcha collected 132 yards on his four punt attempts.
With the win, Augie moves to 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. The team will be back in action Oct. 4 for a road matchup against North Park.
