Football remains at home to battle Millikin

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings football team will continue its small stretch on home territory to face the Millikin Big Blue on Saturday, Sept. 27.

Augustana currently sits at 1-1 on the season and 0-1 in CCIW play following a 50-7 loss against No. 17 Wheaton this past weekend. The Thunder controlled the ball often in the first half, scoring once in the first quarter and three times in the second to create a 29-0 score. Augie saw its best drive of the game come in the fourth, marching down the field 69 yards on 11 plays, with David Finfer rushing a yard for the Vikings' lone touchdown. Jacob Garbeett kicked a good extra point with 5:45 left in the game.

Jimmy Makuh threw 153 yards through the air in the game, while Breyden Smith caught eight passes for 71 yards. Ben Ludlum finished with 42 yards on the ground on 14 attempts. Defensively, Toby Splitt led the unit with a career high of 19 tackles and one forced fumble. 

Millikin enters Saturday's contest with a 2-0 overall record and 1-0 mark in conference action. The Big Blue are coming off a 22-17 victory in their CCIW opener against North Park. Both teams secured touchdowns in the first quarter, but North Park collected a successful extra point to lead 7-6. In the second quarter, Millikin recovered a fumble for 46 yards and connected a 19-yard touchdown to push the score 12-9. Returning to the field, the Big Blue put up three after a successful field goal attempt from 28 yards out before they found themselves in the end zone after a three-yard rushing touchdown to stretch the game 22-9. The visiting team answered but failed the two-point conversion to close the game with a  22-17 score. Sylas Gomez went 17-for-27, tossing for 266 yards and one touchdown. Re'John Zeno was the lead rusher, netting 96 yards, while Kevin Louis had seven receptions for 80 yards.

The Vikings hold a 48-35-1 advantage over Millikin in the series, with Augie holding a three-game win streak. Augustana picked up a 24-20 victory a season ago on the road, with Sean Schlanser hauling in five catches for 62 yards, while Dylan Burton led in tackles with 11. 

Start time on Saturday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
