Box Score ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings football team dropped its season opener on Saturday to the No. 17 Wheaton Thunder by a score of 50-7.

In a low-scoring first quarter, Wheaton scored the lone touchdown to take the early lead. In the second, the Thunder tallied 16 more points to stretch the gap to 29-0. In another low-scoring quarter, the Augie defense held the visitors to just one touchdown. In the final 15 minutes of play, Wheaton scored before David Finfer rushed in for the touchdown to get Augie on the board. The Thunder closed the game out with a nine-yard touchdown to take the game 50-7. 

Jimmy Makuh finished with 20 completions for 153 yards, while Breyden Smith had eight catches for 71 yards. On the defensive side, Toby Splitt led with 19 tackles, with 15 solo and four assisted. 

With the loss, Augie moves to 1-1 on the season and will be back in action next Saturday to battle Millikin.
