ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings softball team ended the regular season with a pair of shutout wins on Thursday at home, defeating the Grinnell Pioneers by a scores of 3-0 and 8-0.
In game one, the Vikings thwarted the first scoring threat of the game in the second inning, throwing out a runner at home to keep the game scoreless. After a double play ended another scoring opportunity for the Pioneers, Augie struck first in the bottom half of the fourth, plating two on a pair of errors from the Pioneers.
Aubrey Gradin got on base with a two-out double and was followed by a walk issued to
Emma Evans. A pickoff attempt to first brought in the first run before a batted ball by
Teagan Nees turned into the second tally due to a errant throw from shortstop.
For the second time in the game, Grinnell saw a runner thrown out at home in the top of the sixth after
Emma Schmidt lasered one in from center field to end the inning. Gradin added another to the Vikings' total in the bottom half with a solo home run and
Mikaylin Hofer got out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh to protect the shutout.
Augustana scored in all five innings played in game two, beginning with a RBI double from Gradin to give the team a 1-0 lead after the first. Nees stole home in the second to give the Vikings their second tally before
Lilli Burton's run-scoring single in the third made it a 3-0 margin. The Vikings ran away with the game following a four-spot in the fourth, posting four hits and benefiting from one Grinnell error to push the advantage out to seven. Gradin secured her second RBI hit of the day after
McKensey Stontz tripled in front of her, while
Emily Gad's double three batters later brought in the team's second run of the frame. Burton collected her third runs batted in with a two-run single to complete the scoring outburst. An error with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth off the bat of
Lauren Durst gave Augustana the walk-off win by run rule.
Jenna Becker earned the win on the mound after pitching three scoreless innings.
Jordan Faust struck out three in relief and Burton led the offense with her 3-3 effort at the plate.
With the wins, Augustana ends the regular season with a 26-12 overall record. The team will play its first game of the CCIW Tournament next Thursday in Bloomington, Ill.
