Pitching shines in road split with Millikin

The Vikings did not allow a single earned run on Sunday in Decatur

DECATUR, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings softball team did not allow a single earned run on Sunday in a split with the Millikin Big Blue. Augie fell in the opener by a score of 2-1 before winning game two with a final of 5-0.

In game one, the home team pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the top half of the first and the two teams played to a scoreless tie through two innings of action. Millikin got on the board first in the bottom of the third, capitalizing on a one-out error and using a stolen base and single up the middle to plate the first run.

Alexis Duke broke up the shutout and Millikin no-hitter in the sixth with a solo home run to even the score at 1-1. The Big Blue earned the walkoff win via an error in the bottom of the seventh to claim the opening-game victory. Lauren Koster struck out two batters in the loss, with both the runs allowed unearned.

In game two, the offenses combined for just two hits through the first two innings. Augustana posted the first scoring threat of the game in the bottom of the third, loading up the bases with just one out. The Big Blue forced an out at home plate and secured a strikeout to get out of the inning. The Vikings scratched across the first run of the contest in the ensuing inning, beginning with a one-out triple by Teagan Nees to left field. Haley Nelson followed with a single during the next at-bat to bring in Nees and give Augie the early lead.

Augustana double its lead in the fifth with another tally after loading the bases with two walks and a base hit. Emily Gad connected on a sac fly to bring in Maya Viel and make it a 2-0 advantage. The Vikings added on with three more in the sixth, collecting a pair of run-scoring extra-base hits from Lilli Burton and Emma Evans. Burton's double with one out score Nelson before Evans' triple with two outs sent home Marley Behm. Alaina Diaz also contributed a sac fly in the frame.

Mikaylin Hofer shut down the Big Blue in the top of the seventh, working around a walk to keep the team off the board. Hofer earned her fourth win of the season, allowing just two hits and striking out two. Evans notched two hits in the win.

With the results, Augie sits at 13-3 on the season and 2-2 in the CCIW. The team will be back in action Wednesday vs. Wheaton.
