ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings softball team collected its fifth straight sweep in conference play on Saturday, defeating the visiting North Park Vikings by scores of 6-4 and 12-4.
In game one, it was a senior who got the scoring started as
Anna Maciejewski drilled a two-run home run in the bottom of the second to give the Vikings the early lead. North Park answered with a two-spot in the top of the third to even the score, but Augie quickly earned the runs back in its ensuing at-bat.
McKensey Stontz began the frame with a single up the middle and came around to score three batters later on
Emma Evans' base hit to center.
Kennedy Williams accounted for the second tally on an RBI fielder's choice to make it a 4-2 advantage for the Vikings entering the fourth.Â
A scoreless inning followed before the visitors inched closer with a run in the top of the fifth. Like the third, Augustana earned it back immediately after Maciejewski notched her third of the game with an RBI single. The lead moved to 6-3 in the sixth after
Alaina Diaz brought in a run and the Vikings worked around a score from North Park and the game-tying run on base in the seventh to close out the 6-4 win.
Stontz joined Maciejewski as the other Vikings with multiple hits in the win, while
Alyssa Magsombol and
Hannah Waddell both added base knocks.
Lauren Koster earned the win on the mound after striking out six.
In game two, Augustana struck first in the top of the first with an RBI double by
Aubrey Gradin, but faced its first deficit of the day two innings later after the visitors plated four in the bottom of the third.Â
The Vikings stormed back with seven runs in their ensuring at-bat, beginning with a sac fly from Gradin to move the deficit to just one. After a passed ball evened the score,
Teagan Nees connected on a base hit to bring in the go-ahead run.
Alexis Duke added on with a two-run single before Stontz, who started the inning with a single, knocked home the final score of the frame. Augustana led 8-4 after four innings of action.Â
Augie continued to pour it on with two more in the fifth and another pair in the sixth.
Emily Gad secured an RBI hit in the fifth prior to Evans stealing home to push the Vikings' run total to double digits. Diaz and
Lilli Burton both contributed RBI doubles in the sixth to help bring the game to run rule status.
As a team, the Vikings notched 15 hits, led by three apiece from Stontz and Gradin.Â
With the wins, Augustna improves to 24-8 on the season and 12-2 in the CCIW. The team will be back in action Monday for a non-conference doubleheader vs. Dubuque.Â
