MOLINE, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings baseball team was defeated in a conference home game on Wednesday by the Wheaton Thunder, falling by a score of 6-2.
After a scoreless opening frame, the Vikings put up a run in the bottom of the second after Riley Hendren singled to left field to bring Colton Davis home to take the early lead. Davis reached base on a walk before advancing to second on a hit-by-pitch to set up the RBI hit. In the fourth, Ryan Theile doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Daniel Mosele. Hendren singled through the left side to bring Theile home and move the gap to 2-0.
Wheaton tallied four in the fifth to take the lead before a scoreless sixth and seventh inning followed with Addison Southwick striking out four of the first six batters he faced. In the eighth, the Thunder crossed home plate once more and closed out the game with a run in the ninth to take the 6-2 game.
Augie collected eight hits, with Hendren, Charlie Bergin, and Theile each notching two apiece.
With the loss, the Vikings move to 15-13 on the season and 4-6 in conference play. The team will remain at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field on Friday to host the Carroll Pioneers.
