Women's water polo claims third straight CWPA title

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's water polo team collected its third consecutive CWPA title on Sunday, defeating the No. 9 ranked and third-seeded Washington & Jefferson Presidents by a score of 10-7.

Augustana never trailed in the win, beginning with the first two goals of the game off of shots by Alayna Ickert and Waiahuli Akau. The Presidents fought back and evened the score at two apiece late in the period, but Emma Blezien's tally with eight seconds remaining gave the Vikings a 3-2 lead after eight minutes of play.

Blezien notched the first score of an evenly-played second quarter before W&J got one back around the five-minute mark. Annie Opal Dickson sent one in the back of the net about 90 seconds later, but the Presidents capitalized on a late turnover in front of the Augie net to get back within one entering halftime. The Vikings led 5-4 at the break.

Augie pulled away with a 3-1 margin in the third, seeing goals by Ickert, Anita Rodgers, and Blezien to make it an 8-5 game with just eight minutes to go. Akau gave the Vikings their largest lead of the game with a score at 6:22 in the fourth before Rodgers tallied her second of the game to all but seal the win around the three-minute mark. The Presidents added their last goal at 2:24, but were kept scoreless the rest of the way as Augie completed the 10-7 win.

Blezien led the team with three goals, while Akau added two goals and two steals. Susan Palmentera-Reid earned the win in net with 15 saves and three steals.

Following the tournament, four Vikings were named to the All-Tournament Team. Lizzie Pelzman and Charlotte Newport notched First Team honors, while Ocean Akau and Dickson garnerd Second Team recognition.

Augustana will get set to compete at the USA Water Polo DIII National Tournament on May 3-4.
