Softball secures home split with No. 23 UW-Whitewater

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings softball team picked up its second win over a top 25 opponent on Saturday, winning game one over the No. 23 ranked UW-Whitewater Warhawks by a score of 5-2 before dropping the finale by a score of 11-3.

In game one, the two teams played four scoreless innings to kick things off, with starting pitcher Lauren Koster working around at least one runner in scoring position in three of the first four frames. The visitors capitalized on an error in the top of the fifth inning for the game's first tally, but the Vikings countered with two in the bottom half to claim their first lead. With one out, McKensey Stontz tied the game with an RBI double to left field before coming around to score during the next at-bat on an Alaina Diaz double.

In the sixth, the Warhawks pulled even with a run in the top half and threatened for more with runners on second and third. Koster struck out the next batter and force a flyout to left to keep the game deadlocked. Augie pulled away with three more runs in the bottom half of the inning, seeing an error begin the scoring outburst and also bring in the first to cross home plate. Stontz was responsible for the team's fourth run with a fielder's choice and Diaz capped off the sixth with a run-scoring single to make it a 5-2 game. Koster worked around a two-out single and walk in the seventh to complete the victory.

As a team, Augie notched eight hits and was led by Stontz and Diaz each with two. Koster struck out three and allowed just one earned run in the win.

Diaz continued her hot hitting in the second and began the scoring with an RBI single in the first for the early 1-0 advantage for the Vikings. The visitors responded with a three-spot in the second, but Augustana earned one back in the bottom half on an Alexis Duke RBI single to remain within a run.

Each team scored once in the third to bring the score to 4-3. Aubrey Gradin connected on a run-scoring double to account for the Vikings' tally. Whitewater pulled away with four in the sixth and three in the seventh to secure the win.

Diaz finished game two with a 4-4 effort, while Duke also added three hits.

Augie will be back in action at home tomorrow for a CCIW doubleheader against Carroll.
