O'FALLON, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's water polo team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday in an 11-6 loss at McKendree.
It was an evenly-played opening quarter that saw both teams find the back of the net twice.
Charlotte Newport notched the first goal of the game for either team after nearly three minutes of scoreless play. McKendree added its first 30 seconds later, but the Vikings reclaimed the lead following a power play strike by
Anita Rodgers. The Bearcats earned a point with just two seconds remaining in the frame to make it a 2-2 game after eight minutes of action. McKendree grabbed the advantage after holding Augie scoreless in the second. The Bearcats added three to their total to lead 5-2 at the break.
Rodgers collected the first goal of the second half to inch Augustana closer, but the team was met with a pair of McKendree tallies in the final 5:12 to see a 7-3 deficit entering the fourth. The home team held a slight 4-3 advantage through the final eight minutes of play to bring the final score to 11-6. Three different Vikings scored in the period, with
Jersey Merrick,
Ocean Akau, and
Mary King all securing their first goal of the game.Â
With the loss, Augie drops to 7-4 on the season. The team will be back in action next weekend for a conference event hosted by Austin College in Sherman, Texas.
