Box Score 2 ERIE, Pa. -- The Augustana Vikings women's water polo team rolled to a pair of wins on Saturday to conclude the regular season, defeating the Grove City Wolverines by a score of 23-8 before taking down the Wheaton Lyons with a final of 25-1.
The Vikings collected the first two goals of the game through the first three minutes of action on their way to a 5-1 lead after eight minutes of play.
Charlotte Newport scored twice in the opening period for Augustana.
Alayna Ickert and
Cindy King began the second with a pair of strikes for Augie to build a lead of six, but the Wolverines hung around with a 3-1 scoring spurt to cut the margin to four at 9-5.
Ocean Akau's goal with three seconds remaining gave the Vikings a 10-5 lead at the halftime break.Â
The five-point differential remained intact through the first three minutes of the third quarter as the two teams exchanged goals. Augie ended the frame with the final three tallies, seeing scores from Akau,
Olivia Parry, and
Maggie Caliendo to give the Vikings a 15-7 cushion entering the final period. Augustana out-scored Grove City 8-1 through the final eight minutes to result in the 15-point victory.
Akau led the way with four goals, while Ickert added three.
In game two, the Vikings coasted to a 25-1 victory over the Lyons to wrap up regular season play. A total of 13 Vikings found the back of the net in the win, led by
Jersey Merrick and Ickert each with four goals. Akau and
Mary King also added three, while
Hailey Sherman added four assists.Â
With the wins, Augustana improves to 12-8 overall and 5-3 in conference. The team earned the No. 4 seed in the upcoming CWPA Tournament and will take on Penn State Behrend on April 11 in the opening round.
