ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's volleyball team swept the North Park Vikings on Saturday with set scores of 25-22, 29-27, and 25-16.
In the first set, both teams traded points until back-to-back kills by Ben Schultz allowed Augie to grab the two-point lead. North Park later regained a two-point lead, but the score shifted to 13-13 and both teams drew even three more times. Two consecutive errors by North Park put the Vikings up 18-16 and Augie followed with a four-point run to stretch the gap to five after an attack error by North Park and a kill by Cole Clarke. The visitors got within two, but a kill by Tom Lamb closed out the first set 25-22.
In set two, Augie grabbed the early lead after a 5-1 run and found a four-point advantage five different times throughout the frame. North Park got within one on three different occasions before a kill by Zach Moreano and an attack error by the visitors stretched the gap back to three. Late in the set, North Park tied the game at 21 apiece and the two teams went back and forth before Augie fought off set point with three consecutive tallies to take the set 29-27.
In the third set, Augustana secured the early lead after a 3-1 run, but North Park tied the game at 4-4. Both teams were deadlocked four more times before three consecutive points put Augie back on top after a kill by Ryan Huntington and two attack errors by the visiting team. North Park brought the game to a tie once again at 11 apiece and both teams exchanged points twice to remain even. Augie converted a 6-1 run to stretch the gap to five after a kill by Huntington before a successful attack by Alexander Sulewski created a seven-point lead at 22-15. Augustana collected the final three points, with Sean Carlson closing the set with a kill from Colin Schaefer to secure the set by a score of 25-16.
As a team, Augie hit .293 percent, while holding North Park to .112 percent. Huntington led the team with 10 kills, while Schaefer notched 39 assists and Max Sellers had 14 digs. Schultz served two aces and Clarke blocked three attempts.
With the win, Augie moves to 12-11 on the season and 2-6 in conference play. The Vikings will return to action on April 2 for their final home contest against No. 14 North Central.
