Softball splits with Cumberland in Tennessee

LEBANON, Tenn. -- The Augustana Vikings softball team split a pair of game with the Cumberland Phoenix on Saturday, falling in game one by a score of 4-3 before winning the finale with a final score of 4-1.

In game one, the Phoenix struck first in their first at-bat and took a 1-0 lead into the third inning. A walk and a single put a runner in scoring position for Augie, setting up a two-out RBI double from Alaina Diaz to even the score at one run apiece. Cumberland answered with a three-spot in the bottom half of the frame to take a 4-1 advantage.

Following a scoreless fourth, the Vikings strung together a rally in the fifth. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with just one out, with Diaz connecting on another RBI hit to inch the team closer at 4-2. Aubrey Gradin's fielder's choice brought in the third run of the game for Augustana, but Cumberland got out of the jam with a one-run lead intact. The Vikings saw a base runner in the sixth, but could not find the equalizer and fell by a final of 4-3.

In game two, the Phoenix again enjoyed an early lead with a tally in the bottom of the first. A scoreless second followed before the Vikings claimed the lead with a two-spot in the third. A pair of singles and an error put three runners on with nobody out, and Meghan Nixon pulled the team even with an RBI single two batters later. Augie snatched the lead on a bases-loaded walk issued to Emily Gad to make it a 2-1 game after three complete.

In the fourth, the Vikings added two more to their total. Diaz was responsible for both runs after sending a single through the left side to bring in one plus another via an error. The Phoenix saw at least one base runner in each of the final innings, including two in the bottom of the seventh, but Augie held on for the 4-1 victory.

Mikaylin Hofer earned her first win of the season on the mound after going the distance and striking out two batters. McKensey Stontz led the team with three hits.

With the results, Augustana sits at 7-1 on the season. The team will be back in action next Saturday at Warner.
