Women's water polo splits final day in Texas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHERMAN, Texas -- The Augustana Vikings women's water polo team wrapped up its trip to Texas on Sunday, defeating the Carthage Firebirds by a score of 13-11 before falling to the Austin 'Roos by a score of 14-13.

In game one vs. Carthage, the Vikings found themselves in an early 2-0 hole, but used a 3-0 scoring run that saw goals from three different players gave them their first lead. Carthage knotted up the score and the two teams brought a 3-3 deadlock into the second. The two exchanged tallies in the ensuing period before the Firebirds built up another two-point lead at 6-4. Olivia Parry and Sophie Arceneaux collected consecutive goals for Augie to pull even, but a strike by Carthage with four seconds remaining gave them a 7-6 lead at the halftime break.

Charlotte Newport began the second half with a goal to even the score and later notched another to cap off a 3-0 scoring spurt to begin the third quarter. Another point from the senior countered a Carthage goal to keep the Vikings up two entering the final quarter. The Firebirds answered with the first two points of the fourth, but another Newport tally put the Vikings out in front for good and fueled another 3-0 outburst. The Vikings endured one final goal from Carthage, but held on for the 13-11 win.

Newport led with five goals, while Hailey Sherman added three assists. Lizzie Pelzman saved 10 shots in net.

In game two vs. the home team Kangaroos, the Vikings jumped out to a 4-1 lead after eight minutes of play, seeing a pair of goals from Ocean Akau during that span. Austin answered with the first four goals of the second quarter to claim the lead, but Anais Jones halted the momentum with her first goal of the contest. The 'Roos notched the final two points of the half to take a 7-5 advantage into the break.

in the third, Austin extended its differential out to as many as four at 10-6, but saw a run of three straight goals by the Vikings to close out the quarter. A back-and-forth final period ensued, but the home team hung on for the one-goal victory.

With the results, Augustana sits at 9-6 overall and 2-2 in the CWPA. The team will be back in action March 27 to take on Mercyhurst.
