Men's lacrosse defeated in home opener

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's lacrosse team was defeated in its home opener on Saturday, falling to the visiting Benedictine Eagles by a score of 21-4.

The Eagles notched the first five goals of the contest before Jake Moore's man-up goal halted the scoring run and put the Vikings on the board on a pass from Tommy Wimmers. Augie kept Benedictine without a score in through the final 4:34 of the first half to remain behind by a score of 5-1. In the second, the Eagles saw their highest scoring output of the game, putting up eight goals to Augie's two. Charley Dore accounted for both of the tallies for the Vikings, including the final score of the half around the three-minute mark. Benedictine led 13-3 at the halftime break.

Jack Sergeant collected the fourth goal for Augustana in the third, but the visitors added five more to their total. The Eagles grabbed the final three goals of the game in a low-scoring fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Eddie Resendez picked up a team-high seven ground balls, while Sam Chapman-Rienstra caused a pair of turnovers. Caiden McCann ended with 22 saves in net for Augustana, good for a tie for second-most ever in a game in program history.

Augustana will be back in action Wednesday vs. Marian.
