Box Score 2 ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augustana Vikings women's water polo team wrapped up its stay at the Macalester Invite with a pair of wins over Caltech and Carthage on Saturday. The Vikings defeated the Beavers by a score of 17-4 before knocking off the Firebirds 16-4.
In game one against the Beavers, the two teams played to a low-scoring opening period. The Vikings grabbed the early lead following a
Waiahuli Akau score before taking a 2-1 advantage into the second with a late goal from
Jersey Merrick. The two teams traded tallies to begin the second, but five scores in a row from the Vikings gave them a commanding 8-2 cushion heading into halftime.
Ocean Akau and
Jillian Hagmann each scored twice for Augie in the frame.
The two teams traded two goals apiece to begin the second half, but the Vikings held a slight 3-2 advantage in the third thanks to a
Cindy King strike with one second remaining. The Vikings held the Beavers scoreless in the final frame and found the back of the next six times on their way to a 13-point win.
Kiera Luhrs and
Anais Jones each tallied two goals in the fourth.
Jones led the way with three goals, while
Susan Palmentera-Reid stopped 14 shots to earn the win in net.
In game two vs. the Firebirds, Augie used a big first quarter to jump out to a 7-1 lead after eight minutes of action. Each team scored just once in a defensive second period as the Vikings brought an 8-2 differential into the halftime break.
Both the Vikings and Firebirds mirrored their offensive output in the second, with Augustana holding a slight 2-0 advantage in the third before winning the final eight minute 6-2.
Nine different Vikings scored in the win, led by four from
Alayna Ickert and three by O. Akau. Jones also added three assists, while
Emma Blezien racked up three drawn exclusions.
With the wins, Augie improves to 4-2 on the season. The team will be back in action February 28 for the start of the Claremont Convergence in Southern California.
